GNU (Version #1)

A recursive acronym (GNU’s Not Unix) for the canonical free/open source software project. GNU recreated (and improved on) many of the fundamental tools and utilities needed to build a GNU/Linux system—tools and utilities that are relied upon by many different systems as well.

See the GNU home page for more details than will fit in a Wiki.

You can also visit this large unofficial GNU Forum to find out what the GNU community is doing nowadays. Nabble archives many GNU projects’ mailing lists into this forum for easy browsing and unified search. It has a fairly complete list of GNU projects. You can drill into each project to browse, or search the postings by keyword and see what the GNU people are talking about.
