HowtosReorganizationDiscussion

It looks to me as if the breaking of the Howtos page into a tree of sub-pages has stopped half way. For the moment, I’ll try to keep both the mostly-all-in-one Howtos and the as-yet-unused-leaf-nodes (e.g. HowtosDeployment) syncronized.

But it looks to my that it would be less work to either finish the job or reverse the changes out. Does anyone know why this process stalled?

I agree that it should either be completed or reversed. Having it halfway only makes it 1) more cumbersome to maintain and 2) confusing to use. That being said, the one-list page was getting quite larger, so I’m not sure what the ideal solution is.

Maybe having both one mega(but sorted) list, and seperate pages is sensible — I hadn’t realized that instiki supports page includes, it could make this setup much easier. Maybe we could have a central “Howto” page, that lists and links to the various sub-how to pages, and another page that resembles the one huge list (by including the sub pages)?

Would implementing tagging for HOWTOs be out of the question at this point? Trees/Leafs/Nodes often become difficult to scale up when you have a group deciding the organization.

Tags could lend to a more organic structure.

The idea of ‘HowTos’ is fundamentally flawed. Of course we come to wiki to find out how to do things, so why add the word ‘HowTo’ to everything? We are repeating ourselves by add that word, and it’s just verbose and unattractive. The ‘HowTos’ section should be scrapped and replaced with just plain topic names.

The idea is not flawed: you just think the name “HowTo” is redundant in the wiki. For a general wiki this is not the case.

On the other hand CamelCaseWikiWordsInLongTitles are ReallyHardToRead. Consider using normal titles.

A central HowTos? page that includes sub-HowTo pages seems to be a great solution: that keep all DRY and is like using partials.

However, it doesn’t work: HowToIncludeAnotherPageWithInstiki. Do I have miss something ?

edit: ok, that won’t work (tried to use the superscript-# to shortcut, but seems that someone has disabled that Textile feature).
Anyone know how to create shortcuts (ie, anchor tags) in the wiki? I’d love to have a shortcut list to the different categories, rather than having to go through the entire thing to see what’s available. Shouldn’t take more than a couple minutes to do, I’d be willing to.

edit again: hah! found it. Shortcutting for ease of navigation!
OK, added the list. It directly mirrors the formatting of the wiki as it is now, I’ll leave organization up to people who know what’s actually in the howtos.

Round 3! Can I request a general organization for 2.0 and pre-2.0 tutorials? Given that some things have changed quite a bit, only updated tutorials should be up at the top.
